As a solution accelerator, the Canadian Centre for Aging and Brain Health Innovation (CC-ABHI) is focused on driving innovation in the aging and brain health sector. We represent a unique collaboration of health care, science, industry, not-for-profit and government partners with an aim of improving the quality of life for the world’s aging population, and allowing older adults to age safely in the setting of their choice.
According to www.alzheimers.net, in 2016 the global cost of Alzheimer’s and dementia was estimated to be $605 billion, which accounts for nearly 44 million people suffering from these illnesses worldwide. Further, in 2014 it was reported that Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers had $9.7 billion in additional healthcare costs of their own (Alzheimer’s Association). Considering these statistics, and the undeniable reality of an aging population, it is imperative that healthcare organizations work together with innovators to provide better resources, solutions, and outcomes for patients and their families. It is for these reasons that CC-ABHI is supporting a number of upcoming events that have the potential to bring innovative new ideas and solutions to the global community.
One such event is the Ontario Long Term Care Association’s (OLTCA) conference: Together We Care – Shaping the Future of Long Term Care from 3-5 April at the Toronto Congress Centre. This conference represents the largest gathering of long-term care and retirement home professionals who are looking to absorb educational content, attend a vibrant trade show that will exhibit the latest innovations for the long-term care sector, and join some of the year’s most well-attended networking events. As a proud Strategic Alliance Partner of the OLTCA, CC-ABHI is excited to have Bianca Stern, our Executive Director of Health Innovations, host a break-out session that will focus on redeveloping homes for the future, challenging conventions, and discovering new opportunities in the long-term care sector.
Moreover, on 7 April 2017, CC-ABHI’s Managing Director, Ron Riesenbach, will act as a judge in support of Aging2.0’s Global Startup Search (GSS) Toronto event, a program searching the world for the best aging-focused startups. The GSS kicks off with a series of events in chapter cities around the world where hundreds of startups will apply to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges. The winning team from each local pitch event will move to an online voting round, where the general public and another panel of judges will evaluate and contribute to the selection of finalists. Those teams lucky enough to be selected will attend the final pitch event at Aging2.0’s OPTIMIZE Conference held on 14-15 November 2017 in San Francisco, at which the grand prize winner will receive a $10,000 (USD) cash prize, along with a one-year membership to the Aging2.0 Alliance. As an organization focused on accelerating solutions in the aging and brain health space, we are a proud sponsor of the Toronto GSS event and pleased to have Ron offer his support by lending his expertise to the judging panel.
The OLTCA Together We Care conference, and Aging2.0’s Global Startup Search represent only two of the many events taking place worldwide that address the challenges we face from an aging population.
