Aging and Artificial Intelligence: A Conversation with Ameca

Aging and Artificial Intelligence: A Conversation with Ameca

Have you ever spoken with an AI-powered humanoid robot? While many of us can’t say that we have, Dr. Rosanne Aleong, Executive Director of Research, Innovation, and Translation at the Baycrest Academy for Research and Education, and the Director of Research, Innovation, and Translation at CABHI, can now cross that item off her bucket list.

During our 2024 CABHI Summit: Defy Dementia, Dr. Aleong sat down with Ameca, an AI-powered humanoid robot created by Engineered Arts, a UK-based robotics company, for an in-depth interview about the use of artificial intelligence when caring for older persons and people living with dementia.

The advancement of AI and iterative machine learning is a popular topic of discussion right now, particularly the ethical considerations that come with it. The use of AI when caring for older persons and people living with dementia is not only relevant for us here at CABHI, but also for many others working in the agetech and longevity sectors. So, who better to ask about ethical questions relating to AI than an AI-powered robot!

Ameca was able to share three main ethical questions that often arise when using AI in care and provide some great analogies to help us understand them, those being:

  • Consent and autonomy
  • Privacy and security
  • Bias and fairness

In addition to ethical considerations, the conversation topics ranged from the growing number of older persons across the globe to the status of AI in the care landscape, how AI can potentially assist in finding treatments and cures for dementia, and more.

From various topics to several languages, Ameca was able to respond to everything Rosanne threw her way. Watch the podcast now to see for yourself!
